Thao Bachieng and Nang Malong’s story

Once upon a time, a lowland man who was hunting for animals in the forest, was in a great danger. Fortunately, he was rescued by a midland guy.

They two became best friends and they made a promise to keep their friendship. If they had children with the same sex, their children would become best friends. If one had a daughter and another had a son, their children would get married.

Time flies, a lowland man had a daughter named Malong and a midland man had a son named Bachieng. Malong was a very beautiful lady; but Bachieng was an ugly man.

Here come to the drama, Malong could not love Bachieng not only because of Bachieng’s ugliness but also her relationship with a lowland guy named Champasak. Champasak who was Malong’s lover, was very handsome and rich.

Malong could not comply her father’s promise with a midland guy. When Champasak knew so, he asked Malong to escape with him.

Meanwhile, Bachieng was heading to Malong’s house with his Khan Mak procession*. He was so furious after knowing that Malong had escaped with Champasak . Therefore, before committing suicide he dumped all the presents prepared for the bride’s family.
Just before he died, he cursed Malong and Champasak not to have a happy ending.

* Khan Mak procession is a Lao traditional wedding process in which the groom will prepare precious gift, such as money, gold, foods, animals, etc. for a bride’s parents before getting married
